Each piece is individually handmade of recycled paper. The bowls, platters and vessels are constructed of multiple layers of paper and adhesives worked over a mold. Paper pulp (a clay-like mixture of paper and adhesives) is used as an outside layer. This combination contributes to the strength of each piece and enhances the texture that is characteristic of this work.
Molds are hand built, often created from found objects, common household articles turned upside down or inside out and combined with others. After several days of air drying the piece is removed from the mold, sanded and sealed in preparation for painting. By using a mold it is possible to reproduce a particular shape.
Finishes that resemble stone, aged metal, and luxurious leather are created using acrylic paints, glazing and dry brushing techniques. The texture and organic quality of the paper and the way a piece may dry unevenly to create a wrinkle or fold influence the painted surface, and remain distinctive. The colour as well as the texture varies, making each piece unique.
Several layers of a clear acrylic urethane finish are applied as a final coat. This is a durable waterproof finish that preserves the paper mache surface, and allows it to be easily cared for. |

My work is the transformation of a mundane material, the creation of something unexpected, a vessel, a bowl, something capable of keeping and holding.
